About College of Liberal Arts (CLA)


CLA has three departments of Chinese Language and Literature, History, and Cultural Studies with a complete disciplinary system. With the motto of “Accumulate knowledge and cultivate elegance; turn intelligence into wisdom; stay righteous and truthful; seek reformation and innovation”, CLA aims to provide society with talents cultivated in literature and history, Chinese and western culture, global vision, innovative spirit and practical know-how.


The college contributed a lot to academic research and humanistic education, as well as serving the development of Shanghai University and the local economy. At present, CLA has about 1200 students, including 130 international students. There are about 118 faculties and staff; among the 91 faculty members, 30 are full professors and 24 are associates.

Programs

Popular programs

1)Global Studies (China Studies) –Master Program

(Awarded a degree in World History)

Global Studies aims for an integrated, multidisciplinary and cross-cultural learning and research on the processes and effects of globalization, the global or transnational issues such as environmental degradation, food security, epidemic disease, drug trafficking, mass migration, identification, peace, conflict, global trade and economic linkages, and even spirituality. By analyzing global phenomena from economic, social, historical, environmental, cultural, biological, political, and other perspectives, Global Studies attempts to arrive at an understanding of the interrelationships among the world's cultures and civilizations, and to foster a global awareness that is so essential for bridging cultural, geographic, political and linguistic boundaries.

2)International Relations and Diplomacy-Master Program

(Awarded a degree in Political Science)

This is an English-taught program with an excellent body of international faculties and students. Under the umbrella of Institute of Global Studies, there are several key research centers: Center for Turkish Studies, Center for Latin America Studies, Center for South Asia Studies, Center for American Studies, Center for Irish Studies, Center for Global Governance, Center for the History of Global Development, David F. Musto Center for Drug Policy Studies, Institute on Religion and Global Politics, etc. The College of Liberal Arts and College of International Education will be responsible for the students’ academic and daily affairs respectively. While enjoying a global context and perspective, the students will have the privilege to learn the Chinese way of thinking as well as the views from the third world. The students are expected to continue their academic careers or to be diplomats after graduation. 

3) International Organizations and Governance-Master Program

(Awarded a degree in Political Science)

This is an English-taught program with an excellent body of international faculties and students. Under the umbrella of Institute of Global Studies, there are several key research centers: Center for Global Governance, Center for the History of Global Development, David F. Musto Center for Drug Policy Studies, Institute on Religion and Global Politics, etc. The students are expected to learn the history and current situation of international organizations, and to promote their role in global governance. In addition to course study and thesis, the students are also encouraged to do internships in relevant organizations. The College of Liberal Arts and College of International Education and will be responsible for the students’ academic and daily affairs respectively.

4)Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies -Master Program

(Awardeda degree in History)

This MA program at Shanghai University provides a broad academic and professional training in all aspects of cultural heritage and museum work, and encourages students to reflect on the concept of cultural heritage and museum. The greatest strength of this course is the way it combines the theory and practice of both cultural heritage and museum-based collections. You will be invited to think about museums and cultural heritage from a global perspective, whilst drawing on the wealth of nationally-recognized institutions across Shanghai, the largest city in China.

Application


Date of Application

From December 30th, 2019 to June 30th, 2020.


Eligibility

Non-Chinese citizen in good health with a valid passport;

Applicants studying for a bachelor’s degree should have obtained high school diploma;

Applicants studying for a Master’s degree should have obtained bachelor’s degree;

Applicants studying for a Doctoral degree should have obtained Master’s degree.


Note: According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education of China, those who immigrated to other countries from the Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan and applying to study in Shanghai University as international students, should meet the following additional requirements: the applicants must hold valid passport or other relevant international recognized documents for at least 4 years; meanwhile, in the latest 4 years (by each April 30th of the year of University registration), the applicants must have lived overseas for 2 years (Living overseas for 9 months can be converted to 1 year, which is subject to the exit-entry stamp on visa).


Language Ability

1) Chinese-taught programs, HSK certificates within the recent two years are required:

●HSK 4 above 180 for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BA);

●HSK 5 above 180 for Humanities.

HSK Exemptions:

Native speaker of Chinese; 

The previous degree is fully taught in Chinese and has gained certificate.

*Note: Applicants who are going to apply for Chinese taught programs in 2021 will be required to achieve HSK 5 above 180.Those who fail to meet the requirement should participate in the International Foundation Program of Shanghai University.


2) English-taught programs:

●IELTS (A) 6.0 or TOEFL IBT 80 or above received within the recent two years.

●Native speakers of English;

●The previous degree is fully taught in English.

Note:

●Documents not in Chinese or English should be translated and notarized

●Fresh graduates can provide a proof of pre-graduate

●The scanned copies of all above documents are required for online application. The originals should be provided on registration day.


Application and Admission

1)Shanghai University Security and Background Check (SBC) for International Students

The purpose of SBC is to check whether the applicant’s personal condition is appropriate to enter the University.

It includes questions about the applicant's personal life, education background and physical health. Please answer according to authentic situation and the results will be recorded by university.

2) University Qualification Assessment (UQA) for International Students

The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate whether international students are ready to enter Shanghai University for degree programs and it is only compulsory for individual international applicants of degree programs.

*Chinese proficiency test is only for applicants with Chinese study experience.

3) Telephone interview

The interview language is up to course teaching language and time length is 10-15 minutes.

4) Expert Committee Interview (Postgraduate only)

Scholarships

Types of scholarship are available for international student at Shanghai University.

School Fee: (Unit RMB/per year)

●Application fee: RMB 500(non-refundable)

●Tuition fee:

   Bachelor: RMB21000/per year;

  Master (Chinese-taught programs): RMB26000/per year;

  Master (English-taught programs): RMB32500/per year;

   PHD: RMB29000/per year.

●Tuition fee deposit:

All applicants of degree programs must pay the tuition deposit RMB 5000 after receiving the E-admission notice within 20 working days. If the payment is not completed after 20 days, it would be regarded as giving up. Those who obtain scholarship after deposit payment can get refund after registration.
